Polymers, Biomolecules and Soft Matter at Interfaces

This modular course will give all IGERT students a common understanding of the properties of soft complex materials which compose the materials that border interfaces (polymers, cell membranes, liquid crystalline materials, gels) or are confined to those interfaces (lipids, biomolecules, trapped particles, surfactants, etc).   The course will consists of 2-3 week moduli taught by faculty in physics, biology, chemistry and engineering to emphasize both fundamental and practical issues. Besides the group presentations on the course material and standard classroom discussions, the students will learn about experimental methods, with a couple of visits, for example, to the SBI facility to see characterization and preparation equipment and to the Surface Image Facility in the Department of Physics. The course will be offered every year in the Fall semester. IGERT students will typically take this course in their second year of graduate studies.
